Ladies of the Silesian Aristocracy

September 17, 2022 - March 31, 2023

Curator: Anna Kempa-Gąsior

Exhibition as part of the Ninth Nobility Weekend

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Belonging to the nobility is not only about splendour and honour, but also about having to abide by the norms and rigours of manners. These, in turn, have over the centuries deeply entrenched the belief that women are dependent on men in both private and public spheres.
The question naturally arises: what great individuals must have the women been, to break out of the rigid framework of conventions and, with their achievements, entrepreneurship and extraordinary intelligence, equalled or even surpassed the male part of society? We will certainly find the answer to these questions in the historical exhibition “Ladies of the Silesian Aristocracy”, which will present 13 figures and achievements of women in whose veins – with one exception – blue blood flowed.

The exhibition offers an opportunity to meet, among others, female writers (Valeska von Tiele-Winckler), social activists (Mother Eva), investors (Joanna von Schomberg-Godulla – née Gryczik, Duchess Louise Sulkowska), celebrities (Princess Daisy, Blanka de Paiva), and at the same time mothers, wives or women who devoted their lives to God and others. They all, going against the tide, pursued the goals they had set for themselves with great determination, thus stepping out of the shadow of history written by men.
