ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
‘Sugar in Pockets’ is an exhibition that stretches like a memoir: unreliable, loopy, soft at the edges and shrouded in pink tulle, cool as pearls.
It is a love letter to chaos, tucked away in a borrowed book.
Among the beads and lace, two artists – mother and daughter – will meet here. They will weave together paintings, drawings and objects into a quiet tale of girlhood and femininity and their minor companions – melancholy, nostalgia, hysteria. The two artists will explain something to us about these illnesses of the soul, reveal a consciousness cracked in half between imagination and memory, and then reach for the attempts, jotted down in the margins of a notebook, to put the world in order.
The exhibition space will include not only paintings, drawings, collages, texts and art objects, but also peculiar fragments of parallel worlds: old costumes, a diary or an album of photographs that have not been discarded. It is worth looking at the details up close; these works are not lacking in childish naivety, teenage freedom, maternal attention and grandmotherly skill.
We invite you to a world of flowers painted as warrens and patiently strung beads – an exhibition about defending oneself against excess – an overabundance of sweets, souvenirs, thoughts unspoken aloud. And for an exhibition about how certain things stay with us, even when we stop wearing them. We find them in time, in an unempty pocket.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Pola Minster (Marzena Naliwajko) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, with a degree in painting in 2002. Her work is a portrait of female life – from birth, through adolescence, to maturity. In later years, she adopts the pseudonym Pola Minster and changes her subject matter and aesthetics. She leads her model into the tight, dense solitude of the metropolitan landscape as a mature, emancipated woman, demanding self-definition, strong but alone in the face of difficult choices and relationships.
