Rafał Olbiński – Icon of magic realism, painter, poster designer, illustrator, graphic artist, designer, stage designer and co-author of the so-called Polish poster school.
Lecturer at the prestigious School of Visual Arts in New York. He has received more than 150 awards for his work, including gold and silver medals awarded by the Art Directors Club of New York and the Society of Illustrators in New York and Los Angeles, and the Parisian “Prix Savignac”, the equivalent of an Oscar, for “the most unforgettable poster in the world”.
Olbiński’s metaphorical painting has been compared to the surrealist work of René Magritte, although the artist himself points to his fascination with Balthus and his style described as magic realism. Tradition is important in the painter’s work, manifested in his references to the Renaissance ideal of female beauty and his fascination with ancient Greek culture. His workshop, based on perfect drawing without the use of computer techniques, is also traditional. The combination of an excellent technique with the artist’s unlimited imagination and a focus on the viewer’s sensitivity gives Olbiński’s works their permanent place in the visual consciousness of his audience.
The exhibition is curated by Dr Sebastian Chachołek – founder and curator of the Museum of Magical Realism in Wisła.
The exhibition will be on display until 13 October 2024.
