ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Konstandinos Kavafis, in my favourite poem Ithaca, perfectly described the journey – both literally and allegorically. The journey to the eponymous Ithaca is not only a geographical odyssey through the Mediterranean, but also a journey through life. The exhibition is a reflection of both these aspects.
In a literal sense – the journeys that resulted in the paintings ran through the numerous islands and coasts of the Mediterranean. In a symbolic sense – this journey lasted a little longer than the Odyssey, because although the works collected in this exhibition date from roughly the last decade, it began much earlier. A sepia sketch from the beginning of this century appears as the only one in the exhibition. It also shows an evolution (coinciding with the transformation of painting in Western culture) from plein air sketches to final paintings made in oil.
Each painting is the result of in situ analyses – of light, space, composition, etc. And since it was the coasts that allowed for longer stops on the journey, it is their landscapes that make up the bulk of the iconography in the exhibition.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Sebastian Wróblewski, Ph.D., architect, lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture at Wrocław University of Technology, combines his painterly sensibility with an architectural view of space in his work. His paintings capture not only the beauty of landscapes and monuments, but also the spirit of places, their history and atmosphere.
The exhibition will be on display until 22 June 2025.
